Table of Contents

Why opt for a masters program in Germany?

In our today’s article, we’ll talk about master studies in Germany for an Indian student. Germany is the 2nd most highly sought abroad study destination for Indian students after Canada. Its popularity is because of the following reasons:

Lower Tuition Fees: According to Times report, Germany has the most universities which provide high quality education at affordable fees.

High Quality Education: Germany is known for its world-class teaching & its unique ability to focus on hands-on learning, which elevates chances of landing a job post program completion.

Reputed Universities: Many German universities are consistently ranked high in global academic charts. The dedicated TU (technical universities) are often considered best in the world for their excellence.

Global recognition & Job employment: Students after completing their programs are eligible to apply for a post-study work permit, which is valid for 18 months.

In addition to these, German chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed that “Currently 20,000+ Indian students study in Germany & she’d love to see more”.

Eligibility criteria

As the eligibility criteria differs from one university to another, we’ve segmented a list grouped by the types of German university education you’re seeking.

Technical Universities (TU)

  • Proof of an undergraduate degree in similar field. (10+2+4)
  • Proof of German language (ZD/TestDaF/DSH)
  • Proof of Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
  • Proof of English language (IELTS/PTE/TOEFL)
  • Proof of Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) – Business Program
  • Documents – Academic Transcripts, SOP, Recommendations, Passport & Application Fees

These are the list of documents required to make a successful application to TU universities depending on the choice of program.

The criteria is pretty much the same for non-TU universities, however some requirements can be exempted or altered depending on the choice of program.

Choosing the right program

Now that you’re eligible to apply for a masters program in Germany, its time for you to choose your subject. We’ve prepared a list of popular study choices among Indian students.

How & When to apply?

How?

German universities accept applications in either of the following 2 ways:
  • Direct Applications (online/by post)
  • Uni-Assist (Intermediatory)

The university will publish one of the way to submit your application on their website. If your university accepts direct applications, it’ll be either an online application or you are requested to send your (attested) documents by post or courier to the university address. Please note that member universities of Uni-Assist often do not entertain direct applications.

When?

In general the universities have 2 intakes of new admissions every year. First being the “Summer” intake & the second being the “Winter” intake. In general, universities will accept applications for “Summer” intake from mid November to mid January & for “Winter” intake from mid April to mid July.

You are expected to confirm the final application deadlines with your university.

You are also expected to collate your documents, draft your SOP’s, get your LOR’s, update your CV, register for GRE/GMAT/IELTS/TOEFL etc before the application window opens.

After you receive an application confirmation

Congratulations! So you’ve received your admission confirmation letter, which you were eagerly waiting for. The very first thing you’d want to do is apply for your student Visa.

The Visa process can easily take upto 8-10 weeks, so it is highly recommended that you have sufficient time to get your Visa processed.

As an Indian student in Germany, you’d have to apply for a long term Visa. Please ensure that you have all documents from Visa checklist.

Once you’ve submitted your Visa application, it is a long wait. In about 3-6 weeks you should have a response from VFS. After the Visa is stamped, you can start your house hunt in Germany. Consider yourself lucky if you’re able to find an accommodation in student hostel!

Please arrive in Germany a week prior to your course commencement. Take this time to let the year long struggle feeling sink in & feel proud about it!

Please note even if your course is taught in English, knowing German is essential for your life outside your university.

Finally, your course commences and its where we bid you a goodbye! Hope this guide helps you achieve your goal & let us know if we’ve missed on any subject you’re planning on studying in Germany! We’d be sure to add it to our list.
